Working in today’s police service is increasingly challenging. More than ever, members of the police service need to be able to keep things in perspective. Police chaplains recognise that much of police work, by its very nature, is stressful and dehumanising. We understand that everybody is a complete person – body mind & spirit - and care for them in this holistic way. We also care for the organisation, acting as critical friends within the decision making processes. In all this, the service chaplains offer is confidential.

Chaplains operate by:

  • Being a familiar friend with the organisation;
  • Being available to anyone who needs to talk in confidence;
  • Being aware, by their ongoing presence, of the stresses and strains of police service life;
  • Visiting, if appropriate, people at home or in hospital and being available at the critical times of life;
  • Leading formal religious services as required by the organisation or individuals.

Chaplains are people of faith, which informs what they do. They only act in a religious way if appropriate.
